Airway Management Physician Update

The American Heart Association Airway Management Course is a unique program designed to give participants the chance to learn, practice and demonstrate their ability in applying many airway skills used in resuscitation.

 

 

Target Audience

Non-anesthesiologist physicians who perform moderate sedation

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate the correct technique for providing positive pressure ventilations using a bag-valve-mask device.
  • Describe the clinical situations in which the use of oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways are useful, and identify at least one contraindication for each device.
  • Identify four devices used to administer supplemental oxygen to a patient with spontaneous respirations, and cite the approximate percentage of oxygen delivered by each device.
  • Demonstrate correct technique for endotracheal intubation and primary assessment (physical exam) of proper tube placement.
  • Describe two methods used to secure an endotracheal tube and prevent dislodgement.
