Conversations in Ethics: Incarceration and Ethics
Join us on July 30 as our guest speaker, Jeff Farroni, Ph.D., J.D., a professor and director of the Institutional Ethics Program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, provides us with an insightful lecture exploring the complex intersection of healthcare, ethics and the criminal justice system, with a focus on the care of patients impacted by incarceration. Although incarcerated individuals are legally recognized as a vulnerable population, the nuances of their vulnerability in clinical settings remain underexplored.
Dr. Farroni will guide participants through real-world case studies and ethics consultations, examining how incarceration status influences healthcare delivery, patient autonomy, privacy, surrogate decision-making and treatment options. Using a qualitative framework, the lecture will also analyze institutional data to identify systemic challenges and patterns in providing equitable care to incarcerated patients.
