WebCast - Jose “Pepe” Alvarez, Jr., M.D. Memorial Lecture on Vascular Disease: Critical Limb Ischemia Prevention and Control: The Road Ahead

, FL US
October 10, 2017

One year after diagnosis of critical limb ischemia (CLI), 25% of patients have died, 30% are alive with amputations, 20% have ongoing symptoms and 25% have symptoms resolved. In managing CLI, the goals are pain relief and the restoration of skin integrity and function. With an estimated yearly incidence of 500 to 1000 new cases per million, CLI poses a substantial burden on patients, healthcare providers, and resources. Dr. Alan Hirsch will assess current challenges in the management of CLI, as well as discuss opportunities to prevent other major complications that could impact patient care.

Target Audience

Cardiologists, Vascular Surgeons,  Interventional Radiologists, Interventional Cardiologists, General Surgeons, Podiatrists, Primary Care Physicians, Emergency Medicine Physicians, General Internists, Nurses, Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists and other interested specialists.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess the diverse mechanisms that underpin the development of critical limb ischemia (CLI), and associated challenges in measuring syndrome incidence and prevalence.
  • Identify public health resources used to effectively prevent other major ischemic syndromes (AMI and stroke).
  • Distinguish the role of physicians, health professional societies, and public health agencies in achieving "CLI prevention and control."
