Physician Suicide: When It’s Close to Home

The rate of suicide among physicians is almost twice as high as for the general population. Please join us for our online course, Physician Suicide: When It’s One of Our Own, with guest speaker Elizabeth Gall and Baptist Health’s Graciela M. Jimenez, LMFT and Rachel Rohaidy, M.D.

Target Audience

Physicians, Physician Assistants, Psychologists (Instruction Level: Intermediate), Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists (Personal Growth), Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, Social Workers, Chaplains, Medical Students and other interested healthcare professionals.

Learning Objectives

  • Define and explain the concept of disproportionate suicide rates among physicians and identify at least three contributing factors supported by current research.
  • Correct at least three common myths about physician suicide by comparing them with evidence-based facts.
  • List and evaluate individual and organizational strategies designed to prevent physician suicide and burnout, including at least two specific resources or programs.
  • Compare perceptions of mental health and help-seeking behaviors among at least three different generational cohorts of physicians (e.g., Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials).
  • Describe the emotional and professional impact of a physician's suicide on colleagues and identify at least two interventions or support mechanisms used by medical students and staff in response.
