Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds – The Aging Kidney

The elderly population in the United States is growing. In 2003, people aged 65 and older comprised 12% of the total population. This number is projected to increase from 26 million in 2003 to 72 million in 2030, at which point the elderly will comprise 20% of the population. 
Dr. Esquenazi will review the effects of drugs in the aging kidney as well as the benefit of a biopsy in this age group.

Target Audience

Hospitalists, Internists, family practitioners, advance practice practitioners and any other interested healthcare provider.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the changes in aging population worldwide.
  • Describe the effects of age and renal function. 
  • Identify the most frequent disease in the kidney in this age group.
