COURSE DESCRIPTION:  

Hemostatic disorders such as thrombosis and bleeding conditions occur when normal hemostatic equilibrium is altered. In the thrombosis and hemostasis field, considerable advancements in clinical therapies have been made due to basic science and clinical research. In this educational activity, we will discuss the basics of primary and secondary hemostasis as well as identify the tests used to evaluate hemostasis. Internal Medicine Physicians, Physician Assistants, Residents, Dentists, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Pharmacists and all other interested healthcare providers. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the basics of primary and secondary hemostasis.
  • Identify the tests used to evaluate hemostasis.
  • Describe the approach to prolonged PT and aPTT.
  • Explain the approach to thrombocytopenia and basics of ITP, TTP, HIT.
  • Review the basics of hypercoagulability testing.
  • Discuss the approach to duration of anticoagulation.
