COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
Join Dr. Nuwan Gunawardhana for a timely presentation on the frontline evaluation and management of suspected Ebola virus disease in the emergency department. Through the lens of a New York City Level 4 National Special Pathogen System (NSPS) facility, this session will review the “Identify, Isolate, Inform” approach, diagnostic considerations, and the coordinated processes required to safely manage and transfer patients with high-consequence infectious diseases. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Identify key epidemiologic risk factors and clinical features that should raise suspicion for Ebola virus disease in the emergency department. 
• Explain the structure and function of NSPS tiered facilities and their role in preparedness and response to special pathogens. 
• Demonstrate use of the "Identify, Isolate, Inform" approach for the safe management of patients under investigation for Ebola virus disease. 
• Select appropriate laboratory testing and biosafety procedures for suspected viral hemorrhagic fever cases. 
• Coordinate the safe transfer of patients requiring advanced Ebola care to a designated Level 1 NSPS facility in New York State.
