COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
Even with recent guidelines on opioid prescribing practices, pain in patients with serious illness remains prevalent in the U.S. Please join us for “Using an Evidence-based, Case-based Approach to Pain Management in Serious Illness” with Mary Lynn McPherson, Pharm.D., M.A., MDE, BCPS, as she describes the steps in the drug therapy selection and monitoring process. Dr. McPherson will also differentiate between subjective and objective monitoring parameters for therapeutic effectiveness and potential toxicity.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Internal Medicine Physicians, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Residents, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Pharmacy Technicians, and all other interested healthcare providers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Describe the steps in the drug therapy selection and monitoring process.
  • Differentiate between subjective and objective monitoring parameters for therapeutic effectiveness and potential toxicity.
  • Design a monitoring plan that includes subjective and objective parameters for therapeutic effect and potential toxicity, given a simulated case of a patient with pain.
  • Adjust the analgesic regimen, based on the results of monitoring a simulated patient with a complaint of pain.
