COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This educational activity will provide participants with an understanding of the physiologic determinants of tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery, with an emphasis on the interpretation of key hemodynamic parameters, including cardiac output and cardiac index (CO/CI), stroke volume (SV), filling pressures, systemic vascular resistance (SVR), mixed and central venous oxygen saturation (SvO₂/ScvO₂), pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPI), and cardiac power output (CPO). Participants will learn to differentiate shock phenotypes by integrating clinical assessment with invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic data. The activity will also explore an evidence-informed, physiology-based approach to selecting and optimizing fluid resuscitation, vasoactive medications, inotropes, vasodilators, and mechanical circulatory support to improve tissue perfusion and guide individualized patient management.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Critical Care Physicians, Cardiologists, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Emergency Medicine Physicians, Nephrologists, Pulmonologists, Infectious Disease Physicians, Neurologists, Gastroenterologists, Hospitalists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists and other interested healthcare providers.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Explain the physiologic determinants of tissue perfusion and oxygen delivery
- Interpret CO/CI, SV, filling pressures, SVR, SvO2/ScvO2, PAPI, CPO
- Differentiate shock phenotypes by integrating clinical, invasive, and non-invasive data.
- Apply an evidence-informed, physiology-based approach to fluids, vasoactive drugs, inotropes, vasodilators, and mechanical circulatory support.
