Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in modern society. The majority of patients with sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated. If not treated, a sleep disorder can lead to chronic fatigue, disorientation and the inability to accomplish everyday tasks. This half-day symposium will focus on the medical management of common and important challenges facing healthcare professionals who care for patients with sleep disorders.

Sleep medicine specialists, neurologists, pulmonologists, primary care physicians, general internists, general surgeons, cardiologists, ENT physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, respiratory specialists, sleep technicians and all other interested healthcare providers

Learning Objectives

  •     Implement assessment tools to assist in diagnosing sleep disorders.
  •     Discuss appropriate treatment options for sleep disorders.
  •     Discuss the latest surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.
  •     Examine upper airway stimulation indications of obstructive sleep apnea and implement treatment plans.
  •     Describe sleep patterns specific to women.
  •     Identify and explain sleep patterns during pregnancy as well as during menopause.
  •     Explain special aspects of sleep apnea as they pertain to women’s health.
  •     Develop an in-depth understanding of the interactive relationship between neurologic illnesses and sleep.
  •     Implement diagnostic skills for sleep disorders impacted by Parkinson’s disease.
  •     Explain treatment options to patients with Parkinson’s disease and sleep disorders.
  •     Explain current insights as to the etiology and pathogenesis of excessive daytime sleepiness.
  •     Identify diagnostic and treatment tools to better alleviate excessive daytime sleepiness and its undesirable sequelae.
  •     Explain and compare similarities and differences in sleep disorders in adults in comparison to the pediatric population.
  •     Improve diagnostic acumen when approaching irregularities in pediatric patients and implement effective treatment options.
  •     Describe normative changes in sleep with aging.
  •     Identify the changing relative risk for various sleep disorders with aging.
  •     Describe evidence-based practices for the treatment of insomnia.
  •     Explain the complexities of melatonin and its appropriate administration.
  •     Evaluate patients with sleep apnea and provide appropriate treatment recommendations incorporating new treatment modalities.
  •     Describe the role of polysomnography in a patient with suspected sleep apnea.
