Major advances in diagnostic imaging, interventional cardiology and surgical approaches have resulted in more accurate diagnosis and appropriate selection of patients for therapeutic interventions in valvular heart disease.
This series will discuss vascular testing used in the assessment of valvular heart disease.

Learning Objectives
- Explain the fundamental physics of contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
- Apply proper use of contrast enhancement agents for EVAR.
- Describe the pathophysiology of EVAR endoleaks.
- Detect EVAR endoleaks on contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
- Characterize enhancement of different types of EVAR endoleaks.
- Describe atherosclerotic plaque on an ultrasound image.
- Demonstrate spectral Doppler imaging criteria used in the classification of carotid artery stenosis.
- Recognize limitations of duplex ultrasonography imaging.
- Explain the need to correlate with other diagnostic modalities.
- Describe the details of patient evaluation and selection for vascular access placement.
- Explain the components of preoperative noninvasive diagnostic testing.
- Recognize the criteria used to evaluate maturity of a vascular access to start the dialysis procedure.
- Describe the postoperative diagnostic surveillance, complications and interventions to maintain maturity.
- Recognize the prevalence of DVT and VTE in the United States.
- Identify acquired and inherited risk factors and Virchow triad.
- Define pre-sonography testing – Clinical examination, Wells Score and D-Dimer essay.
- Optimize the use of duplex ultrasonography in the management of COVID-19 and DVT/VTE.
- Explain why LE duplex ultrasonography may not be the best diagnostic modality in the diagnosis of PE and examine its limitations.
- Recognize the appropriate management for calf vein thrombosis.
- Define ilio-femoral and femoro-popliteal DVT and explain their medical disease management.
- Explain oral anticoagulation vs. systemic heparin.
- Apply the proper protocol for lower extremity duplex ultrasonography.
- Describe compression sonography imaging.
- Examine spectral Doppler imaging and recognize why groin (CFV) waveforms are important to accurately interpret.
- Define critical testing values for lower extremity venous duplex ultrasonography.
- Identify aging deep venous thrombosis: acute and subacute DVT vs. chronic venous fibrosis.
- Describe lower extremity duplex ultrasonography, examine its possible use as a primary screening tool in the diagnosis of PE and recognize its limitations.
- Identify interventional PE and DVT disease management: lysis and extraction.
- Review the updated criteria for the use of lysis and extraction.
