Medical Errors: Promoting a Culture of Patient Safety

Medical Errors: Promoting a Culture of Patient Safety satisfies continuing education relicensure requirements for Florida doctors. The purpose of this course is to promote patient safety and improve patient outcomes by providing an overview of the safety concerns facing health care systems today, including statistics and background on the magnitude of the problem and error reduction, prevention and root cause analysis. This course includes information relating to the five most mis-diagnosed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by the Florida Board.

 

Target Audience

Physicians, Podiatrists, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses licensed in the State of Florida.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion, participants should be able to: 

  • Describe the incidence of medical errors and the effect on patient safety. 
  • Identify the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions during the previous biennium. 
  • Identify processes to reduce and prevent errors. 
  • Recognize error-prone situations/processes. 
  • Identify factors that impact the occurrence of errors. 
  • Define the process and benefit of multicausal analysis (root causes). 
  • Delineate Baptist Health policies and procedures for reporting medical errors. 
  • Identify safety needs of special populations. 
  • Discuss how we can partner with patients/families to prevent medical errors. 
  • Explain what each of us can do to protect patients and ourselves from accidental injury. 
  • Explain the role of the Institutes of Medicine (IOM) task forces on improving the quality of healthcare in America. 
  • Describe 3 strategies to reduce medication errors.
