Legal Decision Makers for Minors: Exploring Legal and Ethical Challenges
Parents are the natural guardians of their minor children and are entrusted to make healthcare decisions for them as a matter of law. This parental authority was derived from the constitutional right to privacy regarding family matters, common law rule and a general presumption that parents or guardians will act in the best interest of their child. In certain instances, other individuals may be required to make healthcare decisions on behalf of the minor patient, either when duly appointed by a parent or by court order. Join us as we discuss the rights of minors and parents in medical decision making, and address legal and ethical challenges in determining consent for minors.
