Bethesda Hospital’s lecture on Understanding Florida Advance Directives will highlight the benefits of advance directives in the hospital setting and educate healthcare workers about appropriate decision-making regarding withdrawing and withholding life-prolonging procedures.

- Discuss the purpose and intent of the Florida Advance Directives.
- Distinguish between types of substitute decision makers, how they are designated, and the source that gives each their authority to make decisions on behalf of incapacitated patients.
- Understand the concept behind, and procedures for, capacity determination.
- Discuss the requirements for informed consent for substituted decision making and withdrawing or withholding life prolonging procedures.
- Understand the legal requirements for withholding and withdrawing life-prolonging procedures, with or without an advance or living will.
