COURSE DESCRIPTION:  

Preoperative evaluation is an essential competency for internal medicine residents and for medical doctors. However, educational resources are limited on this topic. Ideally, residencies would provide an introduction to this topic prior to their residents performing preoperative assessments in clinic or during internal medicine consultation rotations.  In this lecture, we will discuss current recommendations to a patient and minimize overuse and screen for pulmonary diseases that can affect patients in perioperative period.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Internal Medicine Physicians, Physician Assistants, Residents,  Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Pharmacists and all other interested healthcare providers. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Use and apply risk stratification for cardiac events to your patients.
  • Appropriately screen for pulmonary diseases that can affect patients in the perioperative period.
  • Manage a patient with diabetes in the perioperative period.
  • Manage a patient on anticoagulation in the perioperative period.
  • Apply current recommendations to a patient, minimizing overuse.
