Bethesda Hospital’s lecture on Understanding Florida Advance Directives will highlight the benefits of advance directives in the hospital setting and educate healthcare workers about appropriate decision-making regarding withdrawing and withholding life-prolonging procedures.

Learning Objectives
- Discuss legislative intent and purpose.
- Define key terms, including advance directive, living will, surrogate, proxy, durable power of attorney, life-prolonging procedures, capacity, incapacity, informed consent, terminal, end stage and persistent vegetative state.
- Distinguish between surrogate, proxy and durable power of attorney, including the sources of authority and how and when each are appointed or designated.
- Distinguish between durable power of attorney and power of attorney and circumstances that allow attorneys-in-fact to serve as healthcare decision makers for the principles.
- Discuss requirements for initiating substituted decision making.
- Explain medical evaluation and documentation requirements for determining the patient’s condition and capacity.
- Explain medical evaluation and documentation requirements and procedure for withdrawing and withholding life-prolonging procedures.
- Review special requirements for professional social workers serving as a proxy.
- Discuss the role of pastoral care and the Ethics Committee in the context of advance directives and withdrawing and withholding life-prolonging procedures.
