Miami Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology Grand Rounds – Personalizing Treatment for Patients with Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

Miami, FL US
October 25, 2024

Rectal cancer incidence is rapidly increasing among young adults, making it a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in individuals under 50 years of age. Standard treatment involves trimodality therapy— radiotherapy, chemotherapy and radical surgery which can result in significant lifelong morbidity. This is especially consequential for patients with low rectal tumors, as surgical removal of the anus and rectum results in a permanent colostomy bag and profoundly affects quality of life. Personalized treatment strategies are needed to facilitate organ-preservation and minimize lifelong morbidities.

Target Audience

Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Oncology Surgeons and Radiologists

Learning Objectives

  • Compare total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) approaches for organ preservation.
  • Examine current limitations of standard treatment and the potential benefits of personalized strategies that aim for organ-preservation.
