MCI Radiation Oncology Grand Rounds: Standard Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) in Total Body Irradiation (TBI)

This lecture will provide an overview of Stanford’s VMAT Total Body Irradiation technique, highlighting its clinical rationale, treatment planning workflows and quality assurance protocols. Attendees will learn about the advantages of VMAT TBI over conventional methods, including improved dose conformity and organ sparing, as well as practical guidance on implementing VMAT TBI in clinical practice. The course aims to bridge the gap between current practice and cutting-edge radiotherapy technology to enhance treatment safety and efficacy for hematopoietic cell transplantation patients.

  • Describe the limitations of conventional total body irradiation techniques and the clinical benefits of VMAT TBI. 
  • Identify the workflow for VMAT TBI treatment planning, including target and organ-at-risk contouring, dose constraints and plan optimization. 
  • Implement quality assurance strategies specific to VMAT TBI to ensure safe and accurate treatment delivery.
