The Marcus Neuroscience Institute Knock Out Stroke and Cardiac Events Symposium is designed to provide attendees with relevant information regarding new developments and approaches to the management of stroke and cardiac events. This symposium is designed to provide clinicians with in-depth reviews of the latest science and cutting-edge advances in the treatment of stroke mimics, change process to tenecteplase, atrial fibrillation and appendage closures, among other topics. Please join us for this full-day symposium.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this conference, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify two common symptoms of a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
  • Describe the different types of intracerebral aneurysms and identify risk factors for aneurysm rupture.
  • Identify two stroke mimics and discuss methods to distinguish them from a stroke.
  • State the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage in stroke mimics that receive thrombolytic therapy.
  • Describe the physiology of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).
  • List two of the indications for LVAD placement and two potential complications.
  • Identify the contiguous leads used to diagnose the following acute myocardial infarction territories: anterior, lateral, inferior and posterior.
  • Identify two of the most common reasons for a malpractice case in stroke patients.
  • Identify the three requirements of a legal case to determine liability.
  • Discuss the decision-making pros and cons for converting from alteplase to tenecteplase.
  • Identify the steps to administering tenecteplase.
  • Describe the optic nerve pathways and correlation of visual deficits to the location of injury.
  • Identify the different areas of the brain that can result in visual changes and visual field cuts.
  • Identify the stroke patients with atrial fibrillation who would benefit the most from left atrial appendage closure.
  • Define the difference between cytotoxic and vasogenic cerebral edema.
  • Identify two of the initial management therapies used to treat cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure.
  • State normal blood pressure and identify risk factors for uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Identify the different medication classifications for treating chronic hypertension.
