Conversations in Ethics: Ethical Challenges: The Pregnant Patient - January 17, 2018
Physicians who are familiar with the key elements of clinical medical ethics are more comfortable and effective when confronted with ethical issues. The news of pregnancy and the formation of a new life brings excitement and joy to everyone including the obstetrician. Nevertheless, there are times when a patient’s medical condition creates complications that result in challenging ethical dilemmas for the healthcare team caring for the pregnant patient. Maria Victoria Lopez-Beecham, M.D., will discuss the common ethical issues in obstetrics and gynecology and describe how to utilize ethical frameworks to guide clinicians toward solutions to ethical dilemmas encountered in the care of pregnant women. While this course focuses on the specialty of obstetrics, the key ethical framework is applicable across all medical specialties.
