BHSF Ethics Consultants’ Shared Learning through Simulation

September 2, 2025 to September 5, 2025

This course is designed to assist ethics consultants in enhancing their interpersonal skills when providing ethics consultation services. Participants will engage in a scenario-based learning experience where they will complete an ethical consult. Following this, a group discussion will be held to review a video of the consultation, focusing on the ethics meeting, interactions, and resolution.


 

Target Audience

Ethics Consultants including Physicians, Nurses, Pastoral Care Chaplains, Physician Assistants/Physician Associates, and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and articulate the uncertainty or conflict of the underlying value that necessitates an ethics consultation.
  • Apply ethical principles to dissect and explain the nature of these conflicts.
  • Evaluate and identify the most ethically appropriate decision maker in various scenarios (e.g., patient, surrogate, healthcare team, or hospital administrator).
  • Clarify the roles and responsibilities of each potential decision-maker within the healthcare context.
  • Communicate effectively to set clear and realistic expectations about the ethics consultation process with all stakeholders.
  • Develop strategies to manage expectations and facilitate a constructive consultation environment.
