Pulmonary hypertension is under recognized in the perioperative period and can be a life-threatening complication. Pulmonary Hypertension creates a significant challenge for the anesthesiologist, placing patients for surgery in a high risk category. The anesthesiologist needs to have a clear understanding of pulmonary hypertension and its pathophysiology as the clinical decision making in the perioperative setting are directly impacted by these high risk situations. Join us as Ian del Conde Pozzi, M.D. will discusses the perioperative management of pulmonary hypertension followed by a panel discussion and an interactive case discussion of special perioperative clinical situations.

  • Define and describe pulmonary hypertension and its pathophysiology.
  • Evaluate pulmonary hypertension and clinical decision making in the perioperative setting.
  • Identify when to request a cardiology/pulmonary consult and clearance for evaluation and optimization of the patient with pulmonary hypertension.
  • Assess perioperative management of pulmonary hypertension. Induction and maintenance of anesthesia.
