Miami Cancer institute Multispecialty Grand Rounds – Bilateral Mastectomy in Women with Unilateral Breast Cancer: Managing Patient Fears Versus Reality
Overview
The lecture will review the factors that drive women with unilateral, nonhereditary breast cancer to have a bilateral mastectomy. Much of the fear is focused on fear of recurrence and we will review the presenter's research on risks of contralateral breast cancer and survival benefit. We will finally review the presenter's research on psychosocial outcomes after having bilateral mastectomy compared with unilateral surgery.

- Discuss the motivating factors that drive average-risk women with unilateral breast cancer to have a bilateral mastectomy.

- Identify the psychological outcomes of average-risk women with unilateral breast cancer having bilateral mastectomy compared with unilateral lumpectomy and unilateral mastectomy.
