Jose “Pepe” Alvarez Jr., M.D., Memorial Lecture on Vascular Disease: Modern Approaches to Managing Carotid Disease

Miami, FL US
May 5, 2026

Hybrid Conference | 1 Cat. 1
Tuesday, May 5, 2026 | 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Baptist Hospital, 5 MCVI Conference Room / Zoom

The management of carotid artery disease is rapidly evolving, with new evidence and advances in therapy reshaping how clinicians approach treatment decisions. Findings from the CREST-2 trial, along with improvements in medical management and revascularization techniques, are redefining the roles of carotid artery stenting and endarterectomy and highlighting the importance of individualized care.

Please join us to hear James F. Meschia, M.D., FAHA, Professor of Neurology and Chair Emeritus at the Mayo Clinic, present Modern Approaches to Managing Carotid Disease. This activity will provide a practical, evidence-based update on carotid therapy and equip clinicians with strategies to apply current data, optimize patient selection and enhance clinical decision-making in everyday practice.

About Jose A. “Pepe” Alvarez, Jr., M.D.

José A. “Pepe” Alvarez, Jr., M.D., a longtime clinical leader of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute and its distinguished medical director of vascular surgery, died of brain cancer in 2006 at the age of 53. Dr. Alvarez, who was also chief of vascular surgery at Baptist Hospital of Miami, was the first Board-certified vascular surgeon in South Florida and essentially pioneered the development of his specialty in this community. He was an integral part of the development of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, a respected colleague and cherished friend.

As a tribute to the professional achievements and the memory of Dr. Alvarez, an endowment has been established for the annual José A. "Pepe" Alvarez, Jr., M.D., Memorial Lecture on Vascular Disease. For 20 years, Dr. Alvarez practiced general and vascular surgery at Cedars Hospital and Baptist Hospital of Miami as a member of the Surgical Group of Miami. An active member of the American Board of Surgery with special qualifications in vascular surgery, Dr. Alvarez was past president of both the South Florida Vascular Society and the Florida Society of Vascular Surgery.  He was an active member in the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery.
