Compassion Fatigue: Putting the Care Giver First

Compassion fatigue, also known as secondary traumatic stress disorder, is recognizable; it erodes the professional’s ability to function at an optimum level. What happens when a person's ability to be compassionate erodes?  Healthcare professionals need to identify the emotional and spiritual demands inherent in their work. This course will provide an overview of compassion fatigue and deliver effective strategies to address and/or prevent compassion fatigue in order to maximize the quality of patient care and enjoyment of work.

Target Audience

eICU Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.

 

 

Learning Objectives

  • State the difference between "burnout" and compassion fatigue.
  • Describe the emotional, spiritual, behavioral and psychological symptoms of compassion fatigue.
  • Identify steps both individuals and organizations can take to prevent and address compassion fatigue.
  • Describe the characteristics of psychological resilience.
  • Create and implement a manageable plan for self-care.
