Academic Affairs Week Lunch and Learn: Oncology for the Non-Oncologist: “What do I need to know?” Part One and Part Two

Oncology patients often present to the emergency department acutely ill with complications of their cancer treatment.  During this conference, participants will understand and discuss the pathophysiology of common oncologic emergencies.  Participants also will learn how to properly monitor patients with immune related adverse events (IRAE).

Target Audience

Hospitalists, pulmonologists, internists, residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and any other interested healthcare professionals. 

 

 

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the pathophysiology of common oncologic emergencies.
  • Identify signs, symptoms, and complications which result from ineffective chemotherapy.
  • Implement pharmacological strategies for cancer patients presenting with disease related symptoms.
  • Explain mechanism of action for targeted IV immunotherapy. 
  • Implement treatment modalities utilized in patients with immune related adverse events (IRAE). 
  • Execute the requirements of the United States Pharmacopeia on receiving, storing, and transporting hazardous drugs.
