Suicide Awareness and Prevention in the Hospital Setting

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.  A systems-level response to suicidal risk assessment within the inpatient healthcare setting can make a major difference in clinical suicide prevention.  This course is designed to prepare medical practitioners for patients at any level of suicidality-passive thoughts to severe-by providing evidence-based screening tools, treatment protocols and available resources in daily practice to assess and treat patients at risk for suicide.

Target Audience

Baptist Health medical staff physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and techs, respiratory, social workers and other interested clinical employees.

Learning Objectives

  • Utilize evidence-based screening tools to identify patients at risk for suicide.
  • Determine risk and protective factors, recognize “hidden” signs and symptoms and identify the relationship between substance use and suicide.
  • Implement appropriate treatment protocols for patients identified with suicidal thoughts, plans or ideations. 
  • Coordinate with key staff involved in patient safety for the care of patients at risk for suicide. 
  • Easily locate tools and resources to better support patients at risk for suicide.
