MCI-MSK Radiation Oncology: Improving Care and Outcomes for the Oncology Patient Receiving Radiation Therapy: Strategies for Treatment, Management and Patient Education
Knowing what to expect and how to manage radiation side effects improves the patient’s perception of care and supports patient engagement, patient- and family-centered care, and patient compliance, all of which support the achievement of optimal care outcomes. This program will provide the foundation for healthcare providers to successfully educate patients and their families about management of the short and long term side effects of radiation treatment and strategies to improve quality of life during and after treatment. The focus will be on the care of patients receiving radiation therapy for cancers of the lung, head and neck, breast, prostate and central nervous system and for gynecologic cancers.
Target Audience
Oncology Nurses, Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Hematology Oncologists, Psychologists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists, Radiation Technologists, Patient Navigators and other interested healthcare providers.
Learning Objectives
- Educate patients and their families regarding the short and long term side effects of radiation, and convey strategies to improve the patient's quality of life.
- Examine the role of radiation therapy as a cancer treatment modality.
- Describe the treatment for patients receiving radiation therapy for cancers of the lung, head and neck, breast, prostate and central nervous system and for gynecologic cancers.
- Recognize and manage the side effects of radiation treatment for these types of cancers including early and late skin reactions.
- Describe the healthcare providers’ roles in caring for patients receiving radiation therapy.
- Recognize and treat the late effects of radiation therapy in pediatric patients with a focus on complications.
