Conversations in Ethics: Advance Planning Preparedness
Advance care planning (ACP) remains an essential yet underutilized component of chronic disease management and end-of-life care. Despite increasing awareness, clinicians often face challenges in initiating these discussions due to prognostic uncertainty, timing concerns and a lack of training in sensitive communication.
This course, grounded in current research led by Dr. Renee McLeod-Sordjan, explores the psychological preparedness required for both clinicians and patients to engage in effective ACP. The course highlights how attitudes toward death, rather than behavior alone, inform an individual's readiness to complete advance directives (ADs). It aims to bridge the gap between medical care and ethical end-of-life planning.
