A diagnosis of cancer can be devastating for any patient. It requires the special skills of an oncologist to help patients through the rigorous course of aggressive treatment interventions, working toward a curative goal that may or may not be achieved. Please join us to learn about the complexities of caring for patients with a cancer diagnosis.
Target Audience
Physicians, Psychologists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, Clinical Chaplains, Pharmacists, Medical Students, and other interest healthcare professionals.
Learning Objectives
- Identify communication issues encountered during the initial cancer diagnosis discussion between a physician and patient.
- Recognize cultural differences in patients and utilize communication techniques to facilitate the cancer diagnosis discussion.
- Differentiate between curative and palliative cancer treatments and effectively communicate the differences to patients.
- Explain end-of-life treatments and “terminal care” with patients.
