The annual State of the Science Symposium presents Critical Care Best Practices 2017 delivered by expert leaders. The dedicated multidisciplinary critical care community applies consistent, evidence-based care standards to guide our practice. The integrated team of experts promotes excellence and consistency with the mission and vision of both the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses to secure the highest-quality care for all critically ill and injured patients.

Learning Objectives
- Examine the current medical evidence and complications associated with the use of therapeutic hypothermia (also called targeted temperature management) for comatose cardiac arrest victims who experienced out-of-hospital ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillations.
- Effectively identify the clinical applications of temperature management for neurological patients.
- Describe the variation in antibiotic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the critically ill.
- Apply precision medicine principles to antibiotic regimens in the critically ill.
- Develop action plans for dealing with antibiotic optimization in the critically ill.
- Differentiate between shared decision making and traditional informed consent.
- Implement a shared decision making model that includes strategies to overcome common barriers
- Determine when patients are ready for ventilator liberation.
- Employ an evidence-based approach to ventilator liberation.
- Reduce risk of extubation failure by utilizing evidence-based guidelines for the use of noninvasive ventilation and high flow nasal cannula.
- Review the latest survival trends and prognostic factors in critically ill cancer patients admitted to the ICU.
- Identify the most common reasons patients with cancer require ICU admission and utilize the most current advances in the management of these critically ill patients.
- Utilize evidence based diagnostic and management approaches to the critically ill cancer patients with acute respiratory failure.
- Recognize the relationship between critical illness and the human microbiome.
- Identify patients whose microbiome is likely to be affected by critical illness.
- Apply evidence-based alterative treatment options to maintain the microbiome in the critically ill patients.
- Define contraction band necrosis.
- Describe the clinical characteristic of neurogenic stunned myocardium in laboratory, echocardiogram and EKG results.
- Utilize appropriate treatment algorithms for patients presenting with sever stress cardiomyopathy.
- Identify the benefits of precision medicine over “one size fits all” therapy.
- Describe how the data rich environment of the ICU may identify patient subsets for research and precision management.
- Describe the beneficial effects of high flow nasal cannula and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in patients with hypoxemia respiratory failure.
- Employ an evidence based approach to lung protective ventilation.
- Implement evidence-bases strategies for ventilatory support and adjunctive therapies in patients utilizing both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic techniques.
- Identify the major causes of morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
- Describe the unique pulmonary complications patients encounter after stem cell transplantation requiring intensive care.
- Implement best practices for management of infection and graft-versus-host disease associated with stem cell transplant.
