Black Maternal Health and Birth Equity for Providers Workshop
Black Maternal Health and Birth Equity for Providers is an educational workshop, designed specifically for hospital-based providers and medical students, with the aim of improving the well-being, general health and quality-of-life outcomes in Black mothers and infants by 1) providing the community voice in the experiences, barriers and inequities impacting the patient-provider relationship, 2) promoting inclusive decision making throughout the birthing process, and 3) introducing the patient-centered, respectful care models of community birth workers. Co-facilitated by a team of FIU researchers and experienced community-based doulas and midwives, the training improves participants’ knowledge about and awareness of Black maternal health indicators and patient experiences, builds skills and cultural competencies that reduce bias, and provides resources for better collaboration with community-based birth workers. Black Maternal Health and Birth Equity for Providers is a participatory workshop that includes data presentation and discussion with community birth workers. This training program is sponsored by The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade.
