COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

This course will address the importance of protecting patients and their families throughout the organ procurement and transplantation process. Participants will examine the consent process, including the legal and ethical requirements for obtaining and revoking both first-person consent and consent provided by a legally authorized decision-maker. The course will also clarify the respective roles and responsibilities of healthcare providers, hospitals, and organ procurement organizations in end-of-life care, informed consent, and organ procurement. Through discussion and practical application, participants will gain a clearer understanding of the processes and protections that support ethical, legal, and patient-centered organ donation and transplantation.

Critical Care Grand Rounds is a monthly multidisciplinary conference series designed to provide up-to-date, informative lectures on timely topics aimed at enhancing critical care practice and improving patient outcomes. Presentations are delivered by experts within the Baptist Health South Florida System as well as visiting professors specializing in various aspects of ICU care.

Critical Care Physicians, Cardiologists, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Emergency Medicine Physicians, Nephrologists, Pulmonologists, Infectious Disease Physicians, Neurologists, Gastroenterologists, Hospitalists, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists and other interested healthcare providers.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Engage in discussions regarding the importance of patient and family protections while navigating organ procurement for transplantation
• Analyze the consent process and legal requirements for revocation of both first person and legal decision maker consent
• Identify, differentiate, the roles of providers, hospitals and organ procurement organizations regarding end of life, consent and organ procurement
