The primary care practitioner has the special and important responsibility to diagnose and manage patients with every category of ailment, injury and disease. This symposium will provide practical, evidence-based strategies to strengthen healthcare competencies. Expert faculty will explain recent advances in diagnosis, management and treatment and address compelling issues as they relate to managing cholesterol, adolescent medicine, common sports injuries, evaluation of abnormal menstrual bleeding and other women’s health concerns, atrial fibrillation, collagen vascular diseases, common eye problems, physician well-being, nutrition, pain management and fatty liver disease. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A with the faculty during the panel discussion.

FRIDAY, June 29 (5.0 Cat. 1)

  • Diagnose and manage acute atrial fibrillation.
  • Describe the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options for atrial fibrillation management.
  • Recognize when and how to use anticoagulation for stroke prevention.
  • Implement the latest screening guidelines for cholesterol-related risk based on recommendations of the American Heart Association.
  • Recognize the risk factors associated with heart disease, stroke and cancer and initiate effective patient discussions to motivate risk mitigation.
  • Implement common treatments for diseases of the heart and recognize when referral to a specialist is warranted.
  • Describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology of collagen vascular diseases most commonly seen in the primary care practice and know when referral to a specialist is necessary.
  • Identify the most common signs and symptoms of collagen vascular diseases and describe the diagnostic tests most helpful in recognizing them.
  • Discuss the scientific evidence debunking diet misconceptions associated with heart disease etiology.
  • Identify foods that reduce the risk of developing heart disease and describe the mechanisms that make these foods effective.
  • Recognize how emotional exhaustion correlates to interpersonal disengagement and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment.
  • Explain how clinician well-being impacts patient satisfaction, safety and outcomes.
  • Implement strategies to improve personal resilience and an optimal state of personal, physical, mental and social well-being.

SATURDAY, June 30 (4.0 Cat.1)

  • Implement recommendations for appropriate antibiotic prescribing, including clinical practice guidelines that have been developed to improve outpatient treatment of common infections in children and adults.
  • Compare common methods for isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of microorganisms, and recognize the basic mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Recognize pathogenic microorganisms that currently present major treatment challenges due to antimicrobial resistance.
  • Identify patients with sight-threatening and life-threatening conditions of the eyes.
  • Combine patient history, physical examination and appropriate clinical suspicion to determine best-practice management.
  • Explain the factors leading to sports injuries and describe symptoms, causes and treatment of common sports injuries.
  • Recognize the epidemiology and pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cirrhosis.
  • Differentiate the prognosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.
  • Design a lifestyle modification treatment plan for patients with NAFLD.
  • Effectively explain to patients the mechanisms of action of nutrient-dense diets to prevent, treat and reverse illnesses that are highly influenced by diet.
  • Improve patient engagement in preventing the onset of chronic health conditions attributed to poorly managed blood sugar levels related to consumption of foods high in sugar and processed carbohydrates.

SUNDAY, July 1 (3.00 Cat.1)  

  • Utilize a simple, straightforward template to evaluate premenopausal abnormal uterine bleeding in the primary care setting.
  • Implement the most up-to-date treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Effectively evaluate and manage the patient with postmenopausal bleeding.
  • Implement strategies to improve urinary complaints such as stress incontinence and overactive bladder and explain the therapeutic options available.
  • Identify how to screen and apply treatment options for atrophic vaginitis and dyspareunia, which is often overlooked and underdiagnosed.
  • Implement the most current recommendations for mammogram, cervical cancer, osteopenia and osteoporosis screening in the adult woman.
  • Apply appropriate psychosocial screening tools for adolescents.
  • Recognize a subset of common adolescent conditions.
