COURSE DESCRIPTION:  

The untold number of veterans, current service members and military families with mental health needs continues to overwhelm federal and civilian healthcare services. The wounds of war – both physical and mental – leave these people vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression and anxiety. Healthcare workers need be able to recognize the complex needs of this population and address their physical and emotional concerns. Please join us in this course to explore effective, evidence-based treatment options that will help military veterans manage their symptoms and keep them from getting worse.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Internal Medicine Physicians, Physician Assistants, Residents, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Podiatrists, Psychiatrists and Psychologists (Instructional Level: Intermediate), Pharmacists and all other interested healthcare providers. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Define trauma and the psychological sequela following traumatic events.
  • Describe military culture and the impact of PTSD on physical/emotional health and help-seeking behaviors.
  • Identify treatment options to reduce PTSD symptoms.
  • Examine ways to incorporate trauma informed care in the medical setting.
