COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
Please join us for a conference on Morphine Myths, Facts, and Applications with Jessica Eichler, M.D., M.A., FACP, HMDC and Javier Zaglul, M.D.  Drs. Eichler and Zaglul will discuss the perceptions in the general population and the medical community regarding the risks of opioid use, explain the reality of respiratory suppression in symptom targeted doses of opiate medications and review how the doctrine of double effect does and does not apply to the use of opiate medications in end-of-life care.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Internal Medicine Physicians, Cardiologists, Pulmonologists, Oncologists, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Residents, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and all other interested healthcare providers

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the perceptions in the general population and the medical community regarding the risks of opioid use
  • Explain the reality of respiratory suppression in symptom targeted doses of opiate medications
  • Review how the doctrine of double effect does and does not apply to the use of opiate medications in end-of-life care 
  • Discuss how opiate medications interact with respiratory physiology
  • Recognize the Quality-of-Life effects of chronic dyspnea and the role opiates can play in it
  • Describe the results and limits of the OpiDys randomized controlled trial
  • Discuss how to choose the optimal opioid medication based on patient’s symptoms, functional status, clinical status, pathology, and preferences
