Echocardiography and Noninvasive Vascular Testing Lecture Series: Hemodynamic Monitoring with Echocardiography

Echocardiographic monitoring is currently used in a wide range of clinical settings. It is important that clinicians are familiar with the multidisciplinary guidelines for the use of echocardiography as a noninvasive tool for hemodynamic monitoring. This educational activity will provide resources for physicians who want to know more about the appropriate use of echocardiographic monitoring as a quantitative tool to guide therapeutic decision making.

Target Audience

Cardiologists, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, echocardiography and noninvasive vascular testing specialists, nurses, sonographers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists.

American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Sonographers and vascular technologists may use these credits to fulfill their ARDMS requirements. The ARDMS accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Learning Objectives

  •  Evaluate echocardiography-based hemodynamic measurements that can be used to serially measure the response to medical interventions such as fluid and drug therapy.
  •  Utilize echocardiography to noninvasively measure left-sided filling pressures and guide volume assessments in hospitalized patients who may be at risk for both systolic and diastolic heart failure.
  •  Monitor stroke volume (SV) and overall volume status with the serial examination of two- dimensional (2D) and Doppler indices.
  •  Utilize 2-D echocardiography with Doppler to measure changes in stroke volume in response to either a fluid bolus or the administration of a diuretic, while monitoring LAP with transmitral and tissue Doppler imaging, as well as right atrial pressure using vena cava respiratory dynamics.
