ForwardSouth Miami Hospital Harry Kapp Symposium, 27th Annual - New Trends in Pulmonary Medicine
COPD is a common chronic respiratory ailment and a major driver of health care expenditure. Creating care plans for patients with COPD requires concurrent attention to nuances in disease presentation and the application of multidisciplinary resources to optimize health care utilization. This symposium will address immunotherapy and novel bronchoscopic therapy for lung cancer, endobronchial lung volume reduction for severe COPD, sarcoidosis, nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection, and ECMO for respiratory failure.

Learning Objectives
- Discuss some of the latest research on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
- Implement evidence-based strategies in the treatment of patients with ARDS to improve patient outcomes.
- Asses the effectiveness of endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) in patients with advanced emphysema.
- Effectively identify patients that will benefit from ELVR to manage severe COPD.
- Identify patient’s failure that would benefit from ECMO support.
- Recognize the importance timing in referral, transportation and cannulation in the management of ECMO.
- Asses potential complications and outcomes of ECMO support for respiratory failure.
- Assess indications and contraindications for lung transplant.
- Distinguish factors that influence the rank of the patient on lung transplant waitlist.
- Review epidemiology of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) and assess clinical presentation of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary NTM.
- Effectively evaluate diagnostic approaches of NTM and treatment options to improve patient outcomes.
- Discuss the epidemiology of sarcoidosis.
- Assess the clinical presentation of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary sarcoidosis.
- Define diagnostic approach and treatment options.
