COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
Please join us for a discussion on “Volunteerism in Medicine: What are the gaps in care, and how are physicians making a difference?” with Karen Harwood, MSW, CCM, SHRM-CP. Ms. Harwood will assess the percentage of community members unable to access medical care, discuss the burden placed on emergency rooms, discuss sovereign immunity for volunteer care and identify volunteer opportunities for practicing and retired physicians.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Internal Medicine Physicians, Pharmacists, Physician Assistants, Residents,  Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and all other interested healthcare providers

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Assess the percentage of community members unable to access medical care.
  • Discuss the burden placed on emergency rooms.
  • Analyze the demographics of people who do not have access to medical care, locally and nationally.
  • Discuss the reasons why individuals remain uninsured.
  • Appraise the system of care available at county, state, and federal levels 200% at or below poverty line.
  • Evaluate ACA, FQHCs, and the free clinic system (Department of Health VHCPP).
  • Discuss sovereign immunity for volunteer care.
  • Assess contributions of physicians and facilities in our community.
  • Identify volunteer opportunities for practicing and retired physicians.
